Parque Nacional Los Tres Ojos Guide

Journey to the Underworld: Explore the Caves of Los Tres Ojos Guide

Parque Nacional Los Tres Ojos, or "The Three Eyes National Park," is a stunning natural wonder located just outside Santo Domingo. This park features a series of limestone caves containing three (actually four!) breathtaking freshwater lakes, or "ojos" (eyes), each with its own unique ecosystem and beauty. It's a fascinating glimpse into the geological history of the island and a refreshing escape from the city. The caves were formed over thousands of years by the erosion of underground rivers. The Taino Indians, the original inhabitants of the island, used the caves for rituals and ceremonies. The park was officially established in 1972 to protect this unique geological formation and its diverse flora and fauna. The name "Los Tres Ojos" refers to the three lakes that were initially discovered, but a fourth lake, "La Nevera" (The Refrigerator), was later found. Visitors can descend into the caves via a series of steps and platforms. A small raft is used to cross one of the lakes to reach the fourth "ojo." The crystal-clear waters, stalactites, and stalagmites create a magical and otherworldly atmosphere. The park is home to various species of fish, bats, and other wildlife. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition associated with the park itself, you can find many restaurants in Santo Domingo serving traditional Dominican cuisine. Be sure to try dishes like La Bandera Dominicana (rice, beans, and meat), Sancocho (a hearty stew), or Tostones (fried plantains).

Transportation

The easiest way to reach Parque Nacional Los Tres Ojos is by taxi or Uber from Santo Domingo. You can also take a public bus (guagua) heading east along Avenida Las Américas and ask to be dropped off near the park entrance. From there, it's a short walk.
